Includes orders to attend meetings of the commissioned officers of the First Brigade D.C. Militia (1861); a photograph of Company G, New Jersey Volunteers, Hookers Old Division, with pencil and ink notations (1861); a leave of absence certificate and doctor's letter regarding a gunshot wound Hoagland received at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va. (1863); various inventory statements, including those for "ordnance and ordnance stores" and "clothing, camp and garrison equipage" (1860s); a letter of recommendation from the Bureau of Statistics, Department of the Treasury, where Hoagland was employed for three weeks as a substitute clerk (1867); copies of testimonial, endorsement, and appointment letters (1867 to 1882); a clipping, apparently from the New York Evening Post, of an article on Navy scandals, uncredited but said to have been written by Hoagland (2 Feb. 1884); a letter from Hoagland, then Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Investigation, Pittsburgh, Pa., to A.C. Montanye (1910); a copy of H.R. 11182 (63rd Congress, 2nd session), a bill to correct the military record of John H. Hoagland (1913) and letters from the U.S. House of Representatives regarding Hoagland's request to remain at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (N.H.D.V.S.), Southern Branch, in Hampton, Va. (1914); documents from the N.H.D.V.S., including special orders appointing Hoagland to duty there and requisition papers for perishable supplies (1915-1917); a letter from Florence Hoagland to the N.H.D.V.S. regarding her father's pension; and an undated letter detailing Hoagland's military experience, naming the numerous battles in which he took part, and the text of a remembrance or funeral oration by Miss Maude Riggles.

John H. Hoagland was born 1 Mar. 1840 in New Jersey. He enlisted in the 6th New Jersey Infantry Regiment, Army of the Potomac, in 1861 and participated in the Battle of Williamsburg and ten subsequent engagements. He was wounded in the Battle of Chancellorsville. In 1910, Hoagland was Special Agent in Charge in command of the Pittsburgh, Pa., office of the Bureau of Investigation.
